Project updates south-eastern Europe

As Traveling Light, we support initiatives (which we generally refer to as 'projects') throughout Europe.

These projects often involve helping addicts as well as homeless and other displaced people. But certainly also the command that Jesus gave to all of us: 'Go out and make disciples of all nations.' Evangelism, outreach, coffeehouse work, church planting, Bible education... we encourage and support it all.

The project of the month in our secondhand shops / coffee houses over February, was the work of Radko & Nevin Kratsov in Bulgaria. In collaboration with Youth with a Mission (YWAM Sliven), they are active on many fronts within the Roma community, which extends throughout south-eastern Europe. Radko teaches and provides leadership training in Bulgaria and surrounding countries and helps Roma people develop a Biblical vision in every area of life: relationships, work, health, finances, etc.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

The project for the month of March is the work of Teen Challenge in Croatia. All sales proceeds in our shops Twinkeltje and de Schor will go towards this project. So come and visit us! Even if you don't buy anything, you can always give a specified donation.

Ico & Jagoda Matulic lead an evangelical church, several house groups, and two coffee houses. They are also involved in the work of Living Free in Croatia and surrounding countries and in evangelism activities on islands off the coast.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

Now that we are talking about Living Free... Jonatan & Valentina Vlaisavljevic are the overseers of the Living Free network in Europe. They live in Macedonia.

'Living Free' is in fact the non-residential aspect of Teen Challenge. You can follow the program through a church or other group without admission to a clinic or rehab center. After all, it is only a small part of the people who struggle with addictions and other life-threatening problems that register with a rehab center.

Fortunately, there are other possibilities to help people on their way to true freedom. For example, the Living Free trainings, counseling and coaching sessions, and various support groups. It is discipleship that contributes to a healthy spiritual climate in churches and communities. We want to support this work in 2025 with a donation for materials and travel costs.

Donations are always welcome. You can send a gift in different ways, please take note:

Send a donation to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U and make sure to mention 'general' or otherwise which country or project.

Project support coffeehouse The Bridge, Macedonia

Last year March we were able to support the work of Jordan & Vesna Stoilovi in Macedonia with the proceeds from Twinkeltje. They run a coffeehouse in Tetovo.

It's been a while since we visited coffeehouse The Bridge, but that doesn't mean we've forgotten them!

We regularly receive newsletters and stay well informed about what is going on in Tetovo, a city in the north western corner of the country where mainly people of Albanian descent live. The vast majority of the population is Muslim. Others belong to the Greek orthodox religion.

Jordan wants to reach the people in his city who do not know the love of God. He is present in coffeehouse The Bridge a few days a week, where he talks with visitors.

He also studies the Bible together with those interested and last month, in collaboration with friends from the USA, a street outreach campaign was organized which attracted many people.

They handed out more than 200 water bottles labeled with a Bible verse and The Bridge's phone number. The evenings were very encouraging for the team and for Jordan himself, who sometimes feels frustrated that he only reaches a handful of people, while in reality he could reach many more.

That is understandable, yet every person is important in the eyes of God. It is not always about large numbers, but about the love that is distributed to individual people who do not (yet) know Him.

We certainly want to encourage Jordan and Vesna to keep going and continue to invest time and kindness in people's lives in order to reach the farthest corners of Macedonia with the good news that there is a faithful God who loves all people.

Do you also want to contribute to spreading the good news in Macedonia?

Then send your gift (large & small) to Traveling Light, IBAN account number NL91RABO0118582275, BIC: RABONL2U and mention TH|E BRIDGE. You can also

Project 'Roma Bread Basket' Macedonia

The cost of living is rising everywhere, that's for sure. This is also the case in Macedonia where our friends Sokrat and Lena Apostolovski have been working for many years among the Roma population in Skopje.

We have visited them there several times in the past and seen what a wonderfully encouraging work they do.

Guiding and helping vulnerable families, organizing children's clubs and summer camps, planting churches, and also hosting the annual international Roma conference.

Poverty is still a problem in this community and Sokrat and Lena offer support where possible.

They have started up another project for the coming period, project 'Roma Bread Basket'. This project must ensure that seventy Roma families have at least one meal a day, as well as practical groceries such as soap, shampoo, and toilet paper.

The shopping packages are put together and delivered by young people from the community, so it also creates a bit of employment and structure within the Roma community.

We would like to help Sokrat and Lena to set up this 'food bank' initiative. It is nice to see how people in every country stand up to help others through small-scale initiatives. We applaud that!

If you would like to make a donation, you can do so in different ways:

Send a donation to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U. Make sure to mention: ROMA.

Thank you!

Project updates

It's always nice to get enthusiastic messages and photos about the projects we have recently supported. Good to see how donations are spent!

We are happy to share it with you ... and please, do spread the word 😀

In October last year, the proceeds from Twinkeltje went to Teen Challenge Winiarczykowka in Poland.

Janusz and Bogusia Gornicki run a home for the elderly, for broken people, and for those that cannot take care of themselves. They were looking for a project this winter that the men (as far as their health allows) could work on.

Our donation was used to build a goat stable. It is great to see the enthusiasm that they have shown in the work. They now have six goats in the stable and there will undoubtedly be little ones this spring!

Warm greetings from the residents and staff and a huge thank you for the beautiful gift.

In December, we also made a donation to Pilgrims International for food and fuel packages that they distributed among the poor in Moldova.

Our friends from Teen Challenge and Pilgrims delivered the packages with their 51 year old Steyer truck. They have visited about 500 homes and made people happy!

Thank you for your contributions.

In December we also gave a donation to Passage to Life in Greece for their street work in Athens. The money has been used to build a large tent on the roof of their building so that they can continue with meetings despite all the restrictions.

Very nice that we were able to help there as well with part of the necessary funds! Again, thank you all!

👉 In the meantime, we have also been able to donate 7,000 euro for the women's home in Ukraine and 2,500 euro for the opening of a coffee house in Radovish, Macedonia.

Isn't it encouraging that our support continues as usual ?!

All donations, large and small, for all our projects are always welcome and can be directed at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U, stating the country or project you want to support.

Project coffee house Radovish, Macedonia

We are always happy with new initiatives from people who not only hear God's voice, but also obey and take action. Worldwide, there is an enormous call for connection, for people to come together and to look after each other. This is also the case in Macedonia.

Robert and Krasimira Salamanov had the idea of starting a congregation in Radovish. Robert is an ex-addict who came to faith in prison because someone shared the gospel with him. Together with his wife Krasimira, he decided to rent a property in the city to start meetings there.

Nice plan of course, but in the meantime they found themselves surrounded by drug addicts asking for help. So they decided to open a coffee house as well as a church. Always a good combination!

The request to help with the start-up reached Traveling Light through Teen Challenge Macedonia. Funds are needed to furnish the property (it is completely empty) and to pay the rent.

About that prison story ...

Robert was in the same cell as Jordan Stoilov. We know Jordan from coffee house The Bridge in Tetovo. He was the one who shared the good news about Jesus and His Kingdom with Robert. Jordan spoke from his own experience, because God had also radically changed his life.

That's how fire spreads and that's how we keep it going!

We would like to help them with the establishing of a coffee house/church in Radovish and encourage them to keep spreading the good news that lives can be changed!

If you want to help, gifts (large and small) are very welcome! St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U. Do not forget to mention: MACEDONIA.

Growing in times of crisis

In a time when people often think in terms of limitations and impossibilities (this cannot be done, that is not allowed etc.) we can see that God draws His own plan and pours out His blessings without restriction. That makes us very happy!

The proceeds of our shop Twinkeltje over the month of May were a surprise, partly as a result of the help of volunteer Chantal de Jong who has been selling nice vintage and retro stuff for the benefit of Traveling Light in her Atelier Café De Schor in Papendrecht. A total of 1,600 euro was raised for the work Sokrat & Lena Apostolovski are doing among the Roma children in Macedonia.

So many nice items kept coming in that Chantal and Cora designated part of 'De Schor' as a vintage shop. The store is open every Friday from 10:00 to 17:00 hours. The proceeds will always go towards Traveling Light. How great is that! We are expanding in a time of crisis 😁

So, go visit Chantal on Fridays! On Saturdays our own Twinkeltje is open from 12:00 to 17:00 hours, as usual. Every month we choose a different project as beneficiary of the proceeds (from both shops now). For June, that will be the work of Teen Challenge among the homeless and addicted in Georgia.

We have also been able to donate 3,500 euro towards Embrace, the work of Michael and Janet van Boxtel among the poor and addicted in Hungary. As you can see in the picture, Michael makes music and sings undisturbed, during the distribution of food parcels.

As of June 1st, we have started our prayer meetings again:

  • 1st Friday afternoon of the month: we facilitate Lunch Prayer Papendrecht
  • 1st Friday evening of the month: Regional prayer Alblasserwaard
  • 2nd Friday evening of the month: Re-Store (healing room)
  • 3rd Friday evening of the month: Prayer for the Nations
Gifts for our current project, the construction of a Christian drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Lebanon, are coming in daily. Thank you very much for that, keep 'm coming. We would like to sow a donation of 4,000 euro!

GIFTS (large and small) for all our projects are always welcome and can be directed at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

Project news

Last month, we already announced it: During the month of May, Atelier De Schor in Papendrecht would open her doors every Friday and Saturday between 10:00 and 17:00 for the sale of super nice flea, vintage, and retro items.

Half of the proceeds will go to a project in Uganda and half to Traveling Light! We will add it to the proceeds of Twinkeltje over May and this time the amount will go to Sokrat and Lena Apostolovski and their work among Roma children in Macedonia. The sale of flea, vintage, and retro items is going well, so shop owner Chantal de Jong wants to continue in June. So, please come by and visit. It's fun, the stuff is awesome, and you support a good cause with your purchases.

The other project that we are currently raising funds for, is the work of non-profit organization Embrace in Hungary. Michael and Janet van Boxtel work there among the poor, the homeless, and the addicted. This week the Dutch embassy in Hungary posted a video about the work of Michael and Janet.

Nice to see that their work is getting noticed. We will transfer a donation this week. So, if you still want to donate, do it quickly!

We received the following message from Stella Saghian, in response to a gift of 3,000 euro that we were able to give to 222 Ministries for the support of Farsi speaking Christians in Turkey.

"Through our churches in 15 cities in Turkey, we offer this support to our brothers and sisters in Christ and we hope to relieve them in this desperate situation. We are so grateful for your cooperation. We see positive aspects as we come into contact through our online church (the Persian Community Church) with people in Turkey and Iran ...

We have shifted our monthly church services (with an average of 2000 participants) to weekly services. Last Sunday we had about 5,000 participants. In the past two months, we have seen more than 200 people come to faith who are now joining in our discipleship training. Even in the midst of turmoil, God reaches for the lost! Thank you again for your support and cooperation in helping Farsi-speaking Christian refugees. We pray that your light will travel further and shine even more in this dark world."

Practical help, financial support, and spiritual encouragement, ... a triple cord, really. And it works, we see it everywhere!

GIFTS (large and small) for all our projects are always welcome and can be directed at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

Support knows no restrictions

The proceeds of our secondhand shop Twinkeltje over the month of March went to the work of Teen Challenge among the homeless and addicted in Slovakia. This week we spoke with director Patrik Hipp over the phone.

At the time the government measures were announced, they had 15 men in the center in Sered. Many of them then chose to end the program early, not wanting to be "locked down" without knowing for how long.

So, seven men remained and no new students are allowed to enter the program during the lockdown. 'That is quite difficult for the men,' says Patrik. 'Part of the program's strength is that students come and go, which brings refreshment and perspective. When new students arrive, the others realize how far they have actually come.'

The atmosphere in the center is good and a lot of hard work is being done in the vegetable garden, as shown in the video below. Patrik wants to thank everyone for the gift and sends a warm greeting from Slovakia.
Last week we also received a newsletter from Pastor Steve Telzerow from Slovenija. This included a documentary about the work of Teen Challenge there, which was recently shown on television. The video is really worth watching.
As you can see, the support we offer as Traveling Light knows no restrictions.

GIFTS (large and small) for all our projects are always welcome and can be directed at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

Project Teen Challenge Macedonia

Jonathan & Valentina (in blue)
If you have been reading our blog posts for some time, you will know that we have various contacts and support various projects in Macedonia.

Teen Challenge also has activities there. Unfortunately there is no residential rehabilitation center, but Jonathan & Valentina Vlaisavljevic help people with life-threatening problems and sometimes send them to TC centers in the surrounding countries.

Last June, Traveling Light participated for the eighth time in the Balkan conference My Brother's Keeper. The conference was held in Macedonia, and Jan had the opportunity to catch up with Jonathan.

Living Free training
He still gives Living Free training in the various Balkan countries. The group training and discipleship courses are faith based and aim to help people prevent and/or overcome challenging issues.

The goal is to equip participants so that they can give the training themselves in their church or organization. Traveling Light has previously helped with funds for translating Living Free material for Croatia and Albania.

We sincerely hope that TC rehab centers will be opened in Macedonia as well as in Albania and other Balkan countries in the near future. There is a huge need and your prayers will be appreciated.

Training in session
Jonathan also said that there is a possibility to do prison work in Serbia. Think about it, 'Living Free' is quite a special topic when you are in jail, literally. But it will certainly prepare people for a healthy return into society and that is what "rehabilitation" actually means.

In October Europe Teen Challenge will be organizing a 'rehabilitation training' in Portugal. Topics such as core values in a rehab setting, borderlines between care, counselling and authoritarian control, medical issues in rehab, principles of rehab and discipleship will be discussed.
Various people from the Balkans will participate in this training. Cora will attend on behalf of Traveling Light. It is an investment for the future.

TC Macedonia asks for financial support for 1) further translation of Living Free training material, 2) for travel costs to the training in Portugal and 3) for renovation costs for their office (due to water damage after a flood).

When in Europe, donations are welcome to IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht. Make sure to mention: MACEDONIA.

When in the USA, you can make your tax-deductible gift payable to EEO Inc. Make sure to mention: TC MACEDONIA.

Activities + travels

Last week, Traveling Light attended the 10th Roma Leaders conference in Ohrid, Macedonia. For Marja it was the third time she could be there.

Roma leaders from various countries and churches came together for education, prayer and encouragement. It is a great opportunity for us to hear what is happening in the Roma communities in the various countries.

AND... we get to meet up with our friends Sokrat & Lena Apostolovska. This lovely couple organizes these annual conferences and for many years they have been involved in children's work among the Roma in Skopje.

The proceeds of our secondhand shop Twinkeltje over the month of June will therefore go towards their work!

This Thursday we will organize a mission evening in Twinkeltje again. This time we have guests from the USA: Jeroen and Robin Honingh. They are on their way to Israel where they will spend three months volunteering wherever they can. We met them years ago in Israel in the soup kitchen of Brian Slater in Netanya. We had a click right away.

They will share about the how and why of their annual travels to Israel and how they manage to take three months off from work to volunteer in another country. It will be an inspiring evening. Door is open from 19:30 hrs and coffee and tea are brewing. WELCOME.

This coming weekend the ZIP festival will be held on the beach at Salmsteke/Lopik. Sunday afternoon Jan will be preaching. Take a blanket or chair to sit on and some food to share. We'll stay there till sun goes down!

Jan left for Slovenia last week Monday. Together with the staff and students of Teen Challenge he drove from there to Macedonia for the My Brother's Keeper conference. He attended for the 7th time!

It turned out that the conference (where some 350 men from the Balkans are present) was held near Ohrid ... but we did not see each other 😎 This conference is also a great opportunity for us to see, hear and experience what is going on spiritually in the Balkan countries.

It helps us to pray with more passion for the nations. Please join us in praying for a safe journey home for Jan. Thank you.

Activities & project news

This Thursday evening August 17 we will organize a special  evening in our 2nd hand shop Twinkeltje, this time it will be all about Ukraine. We will have dear guests from Kiev, Sergey & Mariana Glushko. They are the directors of Teen Challenge Ukraine and they will share about the work among addicts and homeless people.

It is a very special honor for us to welcome them because the very first project of Traveling Light back in 2011 was the result of a meeting with this lovely couple!

Mariana & Sergey
Doors will be open at 19:30. We invite you for an inspiring, educational and enjoyable evening. There will be an opportunity to ask questions, to see pictures, to pray together and of course we will take up an offering to bless the work of Teen Challenge in Ukraine!

The proceeds of Twinkeltje over the month of August will also go to Teen Challenge Ukraine.

We received a newsletter from Jordan & Vesna Stoilovi in Macedonia. They are very happy with the financial help they received from us. The new location of coffee house The Bridge is officially open and it looks really amazing.

coffee house meeting
They have a weekly program now with different activities such as: women's meeting, Bible study, children's club, etc. We are very grateful that the outreaches in this city (where the population is mainly Muslim) are yielding fruit. People are interested and open to learn about the Bible and to get to know God better.

Nice interior
Again: THANK YOU on behalf of Jordan & Vesna and their team.

We received some beautiful stories and pictures from seafarer's evangelist Guus Peters. He has already made a lot of Filipino sailors happy with Christian literature, films and Tagalog Bibles! Thanks to your donations

Happy sailor!
It is great that we can help Guus again and again to accomplish his mission ... to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with as many sailors as possible.

Last June we decided to open up our 2nd hand shop Twinkeltje as 'healing room' on Tuesday night. We made a pot of coffee and tea and asked God to bring people in need of prayer for healing, restoration or deliverance. The name for our healing room is Re-Store ... a fun play on words in English :)

Tuesday August 22 we will open our doors again (Korenbloemstraat 20, Papendrecht). There are plenty of lovely people to pray with you.

Then some updates on current projects; we have been able to donate 5,000 euro for the expansion of the women's home in Belarus. This coming fall we will help them again with a second phase of this project.

Project restart Teen Challenge Croatia already brought in more than 1,000 euro, so that's going well. Thank you for the donations that keep coming in without interruption. It's amazing what we can do together to support many projects and help people throughout Europe.

Gifts are always welcome to IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht.

If you are in the USA and you want to donate for TC Croatia, please make your tax-deductible gift payable to EEO Inc. Make sure to mention: TC CROATIA.

Project relocation coffee house The Bridge, Tetovo

The Stoilovi family
Do you remember Jordan & Vesna Stoilovi from Macedonia? We helped them in the past with funding for a children's playground and their coffee house The Bridge.

We regularly receive their newsletters and so stay up to date with the developments in Tetovo, a city in the north western corner of the country, mainly inhabited by people of Albanian descend.

Jordan has a desire to reach people in his city who do not know the love of God. He is in coffee house The Bridge every day, to talk with visitors.

New location of The Bridge
In recent years, he has been able to build good relationships with various guests and some of them have now become believers and were baptized. They regularly meet in The Bridge for Bible Studies.

The Bridge will be moving to a larger building in a new location. That is of course great news. The new property used to be a (post) office until recently, but soon it will be the new accommodation for Jordan and his team.

Jacek & Magdalena
Yes, we are writing 'team' because after years of praying and waiting Jordan and Vesna are finally getting help from a missionary family from Poland! During the last few years Jacek and Magdalena have worked for OM among the refugees in southern Macedonia. They have now found living space in Tetovo and will help to reach more people with the good news about Jesus Christ.
Soon this will be The Bridge coffee house

Well, a new location for The Bridge it will be. Jordan has asked if Traveling Light wants to assist in fundraising for the kitchen and the purchase of tables, chairs and benches among other things.

Of course we want to help and we hope that you will come along as well. Together we can give them a nice donation so they can open the new Bridge soon. We hope to visit them again later this year.

Gifts (large and small) are very welcome! St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U. Do not forget to mention: BRIDGE.

Activities and project news

This week Sokrat and Lena Apostolovski from Macedonia will be visiting us. They will be flying into the Netherlands and are planning to buy a good second-hand 9-passenger van (with Jan's technical assistance) and drive it back. They could really use a good vehicle for the transportation of the Roma children to and from Saraj church, kids club, school, etc.

Saturday we are organizing a special mission evening with Sokrat and Lena in our second-hand shop tWinkeltje. They will tell about their work among the Roma people and of course show some pictures. You are welcome to join us for an inspiring evening. The coffee is ready at 7:30 pm. The proceeds over the month of March in our second-hand shop will also benefit the work Sokrat & Lena are doing in Macedonia.

Proceeds of sales and workshops in February were also good for 1,000 euro. We were able to give that as a donation to Michael and Janet van Boxtel. They are the founders of the non-profit organization Embrace. Michael an Janet and their children work among the poorest in Hungary. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.

Bible school under construction + baptismal font outside
Dear friends, project Bibles and cows had a good start, we already received 2,000 euro in donations and we would really like to be able to double it!

A very special piece of news is that Marja's book Grace of Giving has been translated into Farsi and will be printed soon. It will be a great tool at the Bible school and a powerful handout. Will you please pray for the completion of the school, the distribution of the books and also for protection of believers in that region?

This week we received messages and photos from Italy and Belarus, more about that soon. We will also ask for photos of the work at the woman's center in Batumi, Georgia. Once we have some news, we'll write a blog post about it.

We will gladly continue to support all these wonderful projects, but we can only do so with your help. Within Europe make gifts payable to: St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

USA supporters can give a tax deductible donation for project Bibles and cows by clicking HERE.

News + prayer points

Unfortunately there is a daily abundance of bad news from many countries. We like to share GOOD news of the nations in Europe. Negative news is easy to find, good news we need to purposely search for. Psalm 72:19 says, "Let the earth be filled with His presence Yes, let it be so."

Last week we were guests at the annual Roma conference in Macedonia. Spiritual leaders of Roma communities in different countries (Bulgaria and Serbia for example) were gathered for a time of reflection, fellowship and education. For us it is a unique opportunity to learn more about the Roma culture and the specific issues that arise when they become believers.

Miki & Suzanna
Pastor Radko and Nevin Kratsov shared practical lessons about leadership and marriage. Miki & Suzanna Kamberovic blessed us again with passionate music. This time we stayed at beautiful Ohrid lake in the south of Macedonia, a wonderful relaxed place for good conversations.

It is a huge encouragement for us to see and hear how God works among the Roma people.

God sets people free!
Two weeks ago, it was also time for the annual čuvar brata svoga conference (My Brother's Keeper), this time in Slovenia. We were there for the sixth time in a row on behalf of Traveling Light.

More than 420 men from several Balkan countries (all former Yugoslavia) came together for fellowship, teaching, prayer, forgiveness and reconciliation.

Amazing to see and experience what happens there! Perhaps such things will not appear in the newspapers, but we are convinced that these are major happenings with a huge spiritual impact on the nations.

Teen Challenge Slovenia
After the conference Jan and Jim visited the Teen Challenge rehabilitation center in Nova Vas. The center is always full, and they are currently looking for a larger location.

On September 28, Nick Vujicic will be coming to Slovenia for a major campaign against bullying. The Ministry of Education has given permission to broadcast the event LIVE in all schools! The event will be live on national TV. That is awesome, because Nick brings a clear biblical message.

Pastor Steve Telzerow from Ljubljana pointed out that they started a crowdfunding campaign to raise the money needed to organize everything. Make sure to watch this touching video. Investing in the future of Europe from a gospel perspective. Who would not want that? Seeing all those changed lives is the greatest encouragement.

Summer camp Berdychiv
Furthermore, we were able to donate a nice amount of 2,000 euro for the summer camp in Ukraine which will start next week. Thank you for your generous gifts.

And in our own town...
Teus Donk raised more than 800 euro for the benefit of the second hand store we will open after the summer. With his gift we will be able to show shoppers hospitality by serving free coffee, tea and cookies.

Happy summer everyone!
