Project extra bath and bedroom Comunità Brezzano, Italy

The first post we wrote about Comunità Brezzano in Italy on behalf of Traveling Light goes back to 2013.

We have financially supported the Christian therapeutic community in beautiful Tuscany on several occasions and have also visited many times. We organized work weeks to cut wood for the winter with the help of volunteers. Everyone (!) always enjoyed staying at the Casa Shalom guesthouse.

After our dear friend Maria Meier (who led the residential community) suddenly passed away, it has been quite difficult for the board, based in Switzerland, to gain momentum again.

Over the past few years, the board, together with Boris Michin (Maria's coworker who has lived in Brezzano for years) and many other friends,  prayed, listened, and sought God. In October 2023, we joined them in such a prayer session week. The question was how the Christian community, which has been such a blessing to many people from Europe and Israel, could continue.

First and foremost, a caretaker couple was needed. God answered their prayers and opened the hearts of Yoseph and Roberta Cuoco last year to lead Comunità Brezzano. Yoseph and Roberta have a passion for discipleship and, as native Italians, want to firmly anchor Comunità Brezzano in the region.

Comunità Brezzano is a place for people seeking reflection, peace, and reorientation toward Jesus Christ. Through strong connections with Messianic congregations in Israel, they were able to offer retreat time (especially these past two years) to church leaders and their families at Casa Shalom.

In April 2024, a group of us spent a week in Tuscany to offer a helping hand in making repairs on the dirt road leading up to Casa Shalom!

Starting in August 2025, the new caretakers (and their three children) will live with Boris at Casa Nuova. This new beginning will also require some practical adjustments at Casa Nuova, such as an additional bathroom and bedroom. We are grateful that this very special place will continue to exist and pray that many will find peace, rest, and healing in Casa Shalom. We would like to contribute to this renovation.

If you would also like to help, please send a donation. You can do so in various ways:

Traveling... where to and why

A non-profit called Traveling Light is on the road, a lot 😀. In recent weeks we have been to Italy and Poland.

👉Our mission is threefold, namely to provide practical help, financial support, and spiritual encouragement to ministries in need all over Europe.

We travel (always at our own expense, of course, your donations go entirely to the intended projects) to visit and encourage people, to participate in theme conferences, and to roll up our sleeves when needed.

Last week we (Jan, Marja, Krijn and Cora) visited the Europe Teen Challenge conference in Warsaw, Poland. About 250 people from more than 30 countries were present.

Participants are all involved, in some way or another, in running a faith-based drug and alcohol rehab center, a coffee house, a shelter, or some other program that helps people to find Christ. They can be a leader, volunteer, supporter, or former student (ex-addict).

For us it is always a wonderful opportunity to meet so many people, the Traveling Light network is enormous. That is also the special thing behind all the projects we support... we know the people personally!

At some point, the participants were asked who had been blessed by the help of Traveling Light and more than half of all hands went up. Amazing, right?!

During the many trips we make, we can always provide spiritual encouragement, also at an international conference like this.

Marja was asked to open the board meeting with a devotional time on Thursday and on Saturday Jan and Marja gave a presentation in the large conference hall.

We also took a lot of time to pray with people,  think together, and brainstorm about ideas and initiatives.

The first photo is from an encouraging session with our friends Sergey and Irina Romanenko from Ukraine with translation assistance from our friend Jenja Buzinovskaya from Kazakhstan.

Of course, we were also present with our book table, special this time because a Polish translation was available of Marja's book 'Spirit of Truth.' A meeting with the translator and editor was also arranged.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

The week before the trip to Poland we were in Italy for a work week in Comunita Brezzano in Tuscany. For more than 10 years we have been there every year to chop wood for the winter.

This time we helped with cleaning out existing ditches and digging new ditches for better water drainage. The six of us stayed in Casa Shalom and the Swiss team stayed in Casa Nuova.

It was hard work, but we really enjoyed this time together as a team. It is wonderful to give others a helping hand.

After the death of our friend Maria Meier (who ran this Christian therapeutic residential community for many years), it has been quite difficult to pick up the thread again.

The community is no longer a rehab, but more of a place where people can relax and find peace, a retreat center. Due to the good connections with Messianic congregations in Israel, the community has already been able to provide retreat time to various congregation leaders and their families.

In addition to the hard work, we enjoyed peace, beautiful scenery, good food, playing games, many conversations, and relaxing reading time. Worth repeating as far as we are concerned.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

Speaking of Israel, the project of the month in our shop/coffee house Twinkeltje and Atelier de Schor in April was the work of Brian Slater and Abundant Bread of Salvation. We were able to donate 1,800 euro! Thank you all. We were also able to transfer 4,000 euro for support of the work of Teen Challenge in Slovenija. The next project is the work of Teen Challenge in Georgia, more about that soon.

We can always use your donations to support all these wonderful projects and programs. You can send a donation in different ways:
  • 💛Send a donation to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U and make sure to mention which project or country
  • 💳 Give by card
  • 👉You can also donate directly via our website!
  • 👉When in the USA, make your tax-deductible gift payable to EEO Inc. Make sure to mention which Teen Challenge center you want to support.

Travels and fun sponsoring activities

In October we (Jan and Marja) visited Comunita Brezzano in Tuscany, Italy.

Until the beginning of last year, the Christian therapeutic community was run by our friend Maria Meier. After her sudden death in February 2022, we had not been there anymore.

The board of her (Swiss) foundation invited us to spend a few days with them in Casa Shalom, the beautiful house where we stayed for years with groups during the woodcutting work weeks.

It was nice to be there again. We listened a lot, talked, prayed, sang, and brainstormed about how to go on with the Comunita. Casa Shalom remains available as a home for prayer groups, retreats and theme meetings.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

From Tuscany we drove to Lithuania, where we were invited to attend and speak at the annual Teen Challenge conference.

Of course we visited the men's and women's rehab center and also spoke in the church in Kaunas on Sunday. We will share a more detailed report soon.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

This weekend we are back in Italy to participate in the annual Europe Teen Challenge Fall conference. Always a great opportunity for us to meet leaders of the various rehabilitation centers and programs from all over Europe.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

We furthermore like to highlight two fun sponsoring events close to home! On Friday, November 17, our friend Margot will once again organize a bingo evening for the benefit of Traveling Light. You can win nice Oriflame prizes, Marja will be there with a book table and Cora with nice things from Twinkeltje. Register via Margot, Cora or Marja.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

On Tuesday, November 21, our friend Chantal will organize a workshop crocheting Christmas ornaments in Atelier de Schor for the benefit of Traveling Light. Cost: 15 euros. Entry from 7:30 PM.

We just love these events that raise money for all the wonderful projects we support.

Your donations are always welcome. You can send a gift in different ways, please take note:

  • Send a donation to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U and make sure to mention 'general' or otherwise which country or project.

Zurich, Alpha course, TC Finland, and port evangelism

Two weeks ago we (Jan and Marja) were in Zurich for the annual meeting of Comunita Brezzano. Together with all those present, we commemorated our friend Maria Meier who passed away last February.

She has been running the Christian therapeutic community in Tuscany for almost thirty years. We have been there many times, taking different groups with us. We were invited to lead the afternoon prayer meeting in Zurich. Prayer about how to proceed...

All in all, it was an inspiring and encouraging weekend, for everyone.

✦✦✦✦

Last week we (Krijn, Cora, Jan, and Marja) attended a business meeting of Alpha Netherlands in Driebergen. That meeting was very encouraging and inspiring as well. We are partakers in the dream of reaching 1 million people in the Netherlands with the gospel, through the Alpha course.

Anyone can become a 'dream bearer' through sponsorship, which is a great investment! Visit the Alpha website wherever you are. In the past year, we have facilitated an Alpha course in our secondhand shop twice and we want to start the 3rd one in September!

✦✦✦✦

On Monday, June 13, Cora will again participate in giving Alpha in prison, this time in the Rotterdam detention center. The Alpha course will be held on Monday afternoons.

So, please note: there will be NO Tea & Talk in our shop Twinkeltje from June 13 to July 25. Instead, we are open on Wednesday afternoons from 13:30-15:30 hours. Tell your friends!

✦✦✦✦

Speaking of our shop, in May the proceeds (from Twinkeltje and Atelier de Schor) were more than 1,000 euro, which we donated towards the work of Teen Challenge in Lithuania. For June we have chosen Teen Challenge Finland as a project.

Led by Niklas and Heidi Furu (see photo), a fantastic group of volunteers are reaching out to addicts, homeless people, the poor, lonely, and displaced persons. They don't have a TC rehab, but their street outreach is fantastic. They also run a second-hand shop. Surely, they can use some encouragement.

✦✦✦✦

Finally (but certainly not unimportant): Harbor Evangelist Alexander Eberson makes an appeal:

"During my ship visits, I experience an increasing demand for both Russian and Ukrainian Bibles. In my opinion, there is no better chance at the moment than to give Bibles to these sailors who are open to the gospel. With a Bible we give the best we can to them:  'the forgiveness and comfort of the Lord Jesus!' For 1.75 Euro you can give a sailor/woman their own Bible. Will you help?"

If you would like to make a donation, you can do so in different ways, please take note:

  • Send a donation to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U and mention name of project/country.

Good times and bad times

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is world news. As you know we have many contacts and friends in that country. The Teen Challenge network is now looking at how they can help (Zoom prayer, collecting and getting money there, helping TC centers and churches in border countries to take in refugees, etc.)

Please pray for peace, wisdom, and protection) Monday will be a day of prayer and fasting!

In the meantime, our brave skaters Krijn, Esther, and Marieke skated 200, 100, and 76 km respectively on the Gulf of Bothnia in northern Sweden last Thursday. A tough, memorable day, according to Krijn.

With their action they want to collect money for the completion of the second floor of the Teen Challenge drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Falesti, Moldova. Almost 5,000 euro has already been pledged!!!

You can still donate towards this cause. We have now heard that refugees from Ukraine also arrive in Moldova and are offered shelter. Any amount is welcome.

Meanwhile, the Christian Evangelical Community Issacar, just outside Torino in Northern Italy, is busy installing a roof on the shelter next to the church. Traveling Light was able to send a donation towards this project at the end of last year.

We are receiving various photos of the progress of the construction project. The center will be used for practical and humanitarian aid (preparation and distribution of meals and emergency shelter).

From Italy we received the sad news that our friend Maria Meier from Comunita Brezzano in Tuscany has passed away from a cardiac arrest. Her passing is a shock to all who knew her.

Every year we visited her therapeutic community (with or without a group of volunteers) and she was a guest in Twinkeltje on several occasions for a mission night. She will be missed by us and many others!

Please pray for her children (Tobias and Manuela) and fellow worker Boris. We are going to Zurich at the beginning of May for a meeting with the board of the Comunita...

And then this: The project of the month we are raising funds for in Twinkeltje and De Schor is the work of Embrace in Hungary.

If you would like to make a donation, you can do so in different ways:

  • Send a donation to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U
  • 💳 Give by card
  • 👉When in the USA, make your tax-deductible gift payable to EEO Inc. Make sure to mention which Teen Challenge center the gift is for.

Project solar heating Comunita Brezzano, Italy

Recently, we visited our friend Maria Meier in Italy. Maria runs Comunita Brezzano, a Christian therapeutic community in the interior of Tuscany. People with all kinds of problems (psychological, addiction etc.) can stay there for an extended time, rest, and get to know God better.

Comunita Brezzano exist thanks to donations, partial government support for each guest, and the sale of local produce.

They also receive people doing community service, they are put to work in the surrounding villages maintaining flower beds and painting village benches, nice work!

We (Jan and Marja) rented guest house Casa Shalom for a week and enjoyed a wonderful vacation. It was also a great opportunity to catch up and gather some information to support a new project.

On the roof of the men's house Casa Nuova they want to place two (used) solar collectors for hot water supply. This will make a significant difference in the electricity bill.

In addition, they want to connect the existing hot water boiler (which is also heated by solar energy) to the central heating and radiators in Casa Shalom.

So no more wood-burning stove to heat the radiators, but solar energy. In this way, the house can also remain better heated in the winter months.

Traveling Light would like to help with funds. If you want to join us, please

  • Send a donation to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U and make sure to mention BREZZANO, or you can

Travels in Italy

For the past 7 or 8 years we have organized workweeks in Italy. With a group of volunteers we would stay in Casa Shalom, the guesthouse of Comunita Brezzano.

Unfortunately, we did not succeed in getting a group together this year. Nevertheless, we (Jan and Marja) decided to go to Italy and visit a number of people within our network. Perhaps, encouragement is more needed than ever before!

We first went to visit Francesca Spataro who translates Marja's books into Italian. We listened, talked, laughed, and prayed together. Very nice. Nel mio Nome is now available online through the distributor as well as in Italian bookstores.

Then, we drove on to Comunita Brezzano in beautiful Tuscany, where we spent some delightful days. We did some small jobs, but mainly talked with and listened to our friend Maria Meier who runs the community.

The Italians went through a lot this year and many conversations are about the pain their nation is experiencing.

Marja also wrote the first (draft) chapters for a new book in the series about the Ten Commandments in the 21st century.

Years ago, Traveling Light made a donation for the completion of the jam kitchen in the Comunita. Maria is always inventing new recipes: fig and grape jam with cashew nuts. The jam is mainly sold in Switzerland.

And finally, we spent time on the east coast of Italy with Roberta Rapezzi (see picture below). We have known her for years from the Teen Challenge conferences where she is always working as an interpreter. She is a proofreader of Marja's Italian books. It was very good to meet and spend time together.

We realized again, more than ever, that the 💓 of Traveling Light is a spiritual ministry. Meet people, keep in touch, talk, listen, pray, and above all encourage ... whenever and wherever!

And yes, financial support of course. After all, it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Donations are always welcome at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U. We are currently raising funds for Teen Challenge in Austria.

Visit to Switzerland

Just like last year, we received an invitation to come to Zurich for the annual meeting of Comunita Brezzano. In addition, also for leading a brainstorm meeting and for conducting a seminar about the theme 'identity'. A full weekend.

Of course, it was also an opportunity to share meals together and to catch up on life, in short: to strengthen the friendships!

We have supported this ministry for years, through our workweeks in their therapeutic community in Italy and also with financial donations for the construction and maintenance of the rehab homes that our good friend Maria Meier is running there.

For the first time in months, we were on the road again throughout Europe, exciting and nice. The meetings were held in the Evangelical Methodist Church in Zurich, where there was sufficient room for everyone.

We generated ideas about the future of Comunita Brezzano as a non-profit organization, about the possibilities of rehab homes, street work and discipleship in Switzerland and about alternative ways to use guest house Casa Shalom in Tuscany.

It was an inspiring weekend, everyone went home encouraged!

Unfortunately, we (Jan and Marja) received a message early Sunday morning that mother Verschoor had passed away and so we had to drive home earlier than planned.

At the end of August, we will visit Maria Meier in Italy.

Donations are always welcome at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U. We are currently raising funds for Teen Challenge in the Republic of Georgia.

Activities and project news

The center in Yerevan is already in use
The Weissensee fundraiser 2020 for Teen Challenge Armenia has kicked off. If you want to sponsor the ice skaters, read HERE how you can become a part of this great effort to bring hope to the hopeless!

We hope and pray we can raise a solid donation for the renovation of the recently opened drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Yerevan.

Full house at Winiarczykowka, Poland
This month, the proceeds in Twinkeltje will go towards the work of Teen Challenge Winiarczykowka, Poland. This center, located in a former border post, offers a safe home to the elderly. So come visit us in Twinkeltje on Saturday (Korenbloemstraat 20, Papendrecht) for a cup of coffee or a nice bowl of soup and who knows, maybe we have something nice for you in the store.

Last weekend we had Maria Meier from Italy visiting us. She runs Comunita Brezzano, a Christian therapeutic community in Tuscany. On Friday we organized a mission night in Twinkeltje.

Mission night Italy in Twinkeltje
We had a nice dinner together, then Maria shared her heart. We showed pictures of our most recent visit (workweek 2019), we prayed and sang many songs together. It was a very encouraging evening. The offering we collected turned out to be 1200 euro (!), which will all go toward Comunita Brezzano. Thank you, on behalf of Maria.

This coming Friday night we are hosting Prayer for the Nations (every third Friday of the month) in Twinkeltje. We always pray for the nations of Europe, for Israel and the Middle East, for current projects and we share news. This Friday we will have Marek Deicmanis from Latvia visiting. So come and join us! Coffee and tea will be ready from 19:30 hours.

The next project is in ... Belarus, more about that soon..

GIFTS (large and small) are always welcome and can be directed at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

Project support PLUS

At work with the wood splitter
In one of are previous blog posts we wrote about the many projects that we have supported in recent months. But at Traveling Light we do so much more than just fundraising!

Let's go back to the end of August ... For the sixth time we went to Italy for a work week in therapeutic community Comunita Brezzano. Chopping, sawing and stacking firewood for the cold winter months. It is not only a nice job, but also very useful. The evenings were pleasant on the grape-covered terrace of Casa Shalom, where we discussed our theme for the week: 'the voice of the Shepherd'.

Morning devotion at TC Kazakhstan
In September we visited Teen Challenge in Almaty, Kazakhstan. We will tell more about that later because a number of projects, that we may be able to support, emerged from that visit.

We stayed in the juvenile home. We visited the men's rehab center where Jan shared a word for the morning devotion and after that we visited the women's home where currently 20 women and 20 children are staying. We had time to pray and prophesy over each woman that was present that afternoon. It was such a sweet atmosphere of the Father's love. On Sunday we spoke together in a church and we had some time to see the beautiful nature around Almaty.

Israel night at Twinkeltje
In September we organized another Mission night in Twinkeltje, this time with guests from the USA; Jeroen & Robin Honingh. Each year they volunteer in Israel for three months and they have lots of stories to tell. We were able to encourage each other!

The Israel evening in Twinkeltje was also a success. We had a nice display of products from Israel  and many  people came to shop and to have fellowship around the table, filled with delicious snacks.

Visit to Lisbon during the Training Week
From October 10-17, board member Cora Donk (owner and director of coffee house/secondhand shop Twinkeltje) participated in a Rehab Training at Europe Teen Challenge in Fanhoes, Portugal. During this training all the ins and outs of faith-based drugs and alcohol rehabilitation were discussed. Participants came from various European countries, so the week-long training was also a great networking opportunity for her.

And as if that is not enough 😁
  • The Alpha prison courses started again in September. Cora and Krijn are involved in this.
  • Saturday November 2nd, we are hosting a WORSHIP night in the basement of Atelier Café De Schor, Bosch 6 in Papendrecht. Coffee and tea are available from 19:30,  prayers will start at 20:00 hrs.

GIFTS (large and small) go directly to the projects and are always welcome at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

Switzerland added to our network

During work week 2018
We promised to write a short report about our recent visit to Switzerland. At the end of May we (Jan and Marja) drove to Zurich.

We had received an invitation to be present at the annual meeting of Comunita Brezzano. We have supported this ministry for years through our work weeks in their therapeutic community in Italy and also with financial donations for the construction and maintenance of the shelter homes that our good friend Maria Meier is running there.

The wonderful thing was that we were asked to give a presentation about the work of Traveling Light. How cool is that? We are happy to travel for that reason alone.

Members of the Comunita Brezzano Foundation
We were warmly welcomed by Corina Schmidt who works among the homeless and addicted in Zurich. We stayed at her home the first night and enjoyed a delicious sabbath meal together. Sharing life, sharing meals... a great way to get to know each other 😊

The annual meeting was a party in itself, because everyone had brought good food ... organic and vegetarian! We gave a presentation about the projects we support in the various countries of Europe and 👉we were able to share a lot about the work of Teen Challenge and everything God is doing in countries all over Europe.

prayer room
Our book table
Our story was a huge encouragement for the Swiss ... to know that, no matter how small your organization is, we are all part of something much bigger! Every human life that changes counts.

They even did an offering for Traveling Light and collected almost 1500 euro, which of course fully benefits the various projects we support.

We were then invited by Werner & Heidi Dellapiazza to go home with them for the rest of the weekend. We talked a lot, shared meals, walked, prayed, even played games. Quite delightful, especially when you consider that we had never met these people before. We felt connected right away.

Looking over Buchs with Werner and Heidi
Werner and Heidi lead prayer movements in Switzerland. In their house there is also a 24-hour prayer room where everyone can go (the door is always open) to seek silence and to pray for Israel. It was very inspiring for us to see and hear that in Switzerland people are seriously working out their faith and that they have a heart for the nations.

PS: At the end of August we will go to Italy again for a work week. If you want to come along, please contact us.

Donations for all our awesome projects are always welcome at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

Report work week Tuscany

The Italian editions of Marja's book are a blessing
We are looking back at a very special time in Italy. The weekend prior to the work week in Tuscany, we (Jan and Marja) visited the city of Genoa.

We took a tour of the sea aquarium and the old city center and on Sunday morning we spoke at Chiesa Ev. della Riconciliazione.

We have known Pastor Daniele Marzano for many years through our Teen Challenge network. With a team of volunteers he runs the street and coffee house in Genoa.

Team work
As we drove back and forth between Genoa and Recco (where we stayed with friends), we noticed how centrally located the bridge is that collapsed on Tuesday, August 14th. Wherever we went we passed it.

The disaster has had a huge impact on the city, somehow also for the better ... hands are being put together to help the hundreds of people who had to leave their houses (under the bridge).

On Monday we continued our journey towards Tuscany. We met the rest of the group in the medieval town of Massa Maritima. From there we drove together to the therapeutic community Comunita Brezzano.

Another great job done!
For the fifth year we organized a work week there.

With great enthusiasm we chopped a huge amount of wood, sawn it, split it and piled it up. In the evening we sat outside (by a campfire) to think and talk about our theme: Hope for the Future. The scripture we used for that was Romans 15:13.

We had a wonderful time together, a week in which we learned a lot from each other, not to mention from God himself who gave us the words through the Holy Spirit to pray for and with each other.

Sunday morning Bible study
Thank you Adrie, Anja, Henk, Jan, Marja, Teske and Ynse for a great job done. It was nice to spend a week together. Who knows what we are going to do next year ...

Donations for our projects are always welcome at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

We are currently fundraising for project Teen Challenge rehab center in Lebanon.

Work week Italy & project Casa Shalom

During last year's work week

Summer vacation is almost there. For Traveling Light it means ... preparing for the work week in Italy.

[If you want to know what a work week is like, you can read HERE about previous years.]

From Monday August 27 to Monday September 3rd, 2018 we will be in Comunita Brezzano in beautiful Tuscany.

We still have room for 1 or (max.) 2 strong men who want to join us. Please contact us if you want to come.

The theme for the coming work week is 'Hope for the future'.

Afternoon break
We also made a promise to Maria Meier, who runs Comunita Brezzano.

The bathrooms and showers in Casa Shalom (where we stay every year) have to be remodeled to bring everything up to code. They need around 1,500 euro to get this job done.

It would be nice to help her not only with wood cutting, but also with the maintenance of this beautiful Tuscan guest house.

And back to work...
Renting out Casa Shalom brings in funds to run this Christian therapeutic community, a small-scale rehab facility that is largely sponsored through donations. People with serious addiction and / or psychological problems can live and work here for an extended period of time.

They can find peace and get to know God.

Your cheerful gifts are always welcome at St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U and make sure to mention: CASA SHALOM.
