Ice skating fundraiser brings in 8,800 euro for TC women's home Romania

A shout-out to our ice skaters! Both Albert and Krijn completed the 200 km ride on the Weissensee last week.

We can all look back with thankful hearts to their fundraiser that brought in eighty-eight hundred euros for the Teen Challenge women's rehab home 'House of Joy' in Romania.

The center offers a safe place for women who struggle with addictions, homelessness, prostitution etc. and it offers the opportunity to start a new life!

Albert van de Graaf and Krijn Donk rode the grueling tour on the Weissensee in Austria on January 26 and 30 respectively. The 200 km ice skating tour wasn't an easy task, both skaters encountered a lot of hardships during the day due to falls and deteriorating ice as a result of temperatures just above zero.

After several hours, the ice turned into a slush in which the skaters found themselves stuck. Cracks were no longer visible and that, in addition to fatigue, was the reason for the many falls. Both men really wanted to finish the tour and not disappoint their sponsors and they eventually reached the finish line in one piece!

The support for their campaign was overwhelming and the amount of 8,800 euros will entirely benefit the Teen Challenge women's center 'House of Joy' in Romania.

Funds are needed for maintenance and expansion work, such as installing outdoor lighting, creating additional parking spaces for visitors and workers, expanding sanitary facilities, and completing the classroom and studio in the backyard.

On behalf of Traveling Light, the skaters would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to this successful fundraiser. We will keep you informed about the work on the women's house through this blog.

By the way, donations are always welcome, for we have many projects on our waiting list that need sponsoring. You can send a gift in different ways, please take note:

Project updates and activities

Kind regards from our Teen Challenge friends in Berdychiv, Ukraine.

On November 3rd, we wrote a message about the daily happenings in the various rehab centers there (you can read that message HERE).

We were able to send them a nice gift of 5,000 euros that will be used, among other things, for repairs and maintenance of the houses. Something that had been planned for some time, was repairs and renovation of the boiler room.

Thanks to your generous donations, they have been able to purchase materials and work can resume (always a useful part of the rehabilitation process, by the way).

Just before the end of the year, we were able to transfer another gift of 5,000 euros (THANK YOU!!!). This time for the purchase of a house that will serve as a home for staff, visitors, and volunteers. More news about that soon!

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

Also warm greetings from Moldova. Our friends from Pilgrims and Teen Challenge organized their winter aid campaign for the 19th time.

The fuel and food packages meet a huge need, each package contains approximately 12 to 13 kilos of food!

The men set off again with the Steyer truck to distribute the packages. Thanks to your donations, we were able to bless them with a gift of 3,000 euros for this project. Thank you.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

We also received a newsletter and photos from Port Evangelist Alexander Eberson. We were also able to transfer a nice gift of 2,000 euros to his organization Living Water.

Especially during December, he visited many sailors on seafaring vessels in the ports of Ghent and Terneuzen... the men are often away from home for a long time. He handed out Christmas packages, was allowed to pray with crew members, read the Bible, and had many conversations.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

On Wednesday, January 24th, we will organize another mission evening in Twinkeltje. We are looking forward to have a visitor from Lithuania... a Dutchman, that will be. Willem Vandijk will tell his story of how he ended up from Holland in Ireland and later on in Lithuania, where he founded the Vilties Inkaras (Anchor of Hope) non-profit foundation.

It promises to be an inspiring evening. We look forward to your arrival. Entry from 7:30 PM. WELCOME!

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

Project coffeehouse work Teen Challenge Albania is still a current project for fundraising and of course the Weissensee fundraiser for the women's house in Romania is up and running. So, you see, plenty to do and give away 😁.

Weissensee fundraiser for Teen Challenge women's home, Romania

It's January again, the month of our most exciting fundraising campaign of the year.

Albert van de Graaf (Bleskensgraaf) and Krijn Donk (Papendrecht) have signed up for speed ice skating on respectively January 30 and 26,  on the Weissensee in Austria. They are planning to go for 200 km!

The skaters want to raise money with their performance for a great project: House of Joy, the Teen Challenge rehabilitation center for women with life controlling problems, just outside Bucharest in Romania.

👉They obviously hope that you will sponsor their fundraising campaign.

House of Joy opened up in 2015 (we visited in 2017). The home can accommodate nine women and four 'interns', which are women who have completed the rehabilitation program and stay on as volunteers to help.

The women who come to Teen Challenge have often struggled with life-threatening problems, such as drug and alcohol addiction, prostitution, crime, homelessness, and physical and psychological challenges, for a long time.

In House of Joy they not only find a safe place to live, but for many, it is also the first time they are introduced to the love and grace 💗of Jesus Christ.

House of Joy continues to exist thanks to donations from loyal donors. Funds for daily operations are always needed, but several things have been on their wish list for a while.

Practical things in and around the house, that benefit living and working conditions, such as:

  • the construction of two official parking spaces at the house (for the workers)
  • the renewal and expansion of sanitary facilities
  • installing outdoor lighting and
  • finishing the rooftops of the two container units in the back yard that serve as classroom and studio, and a canopy and seating area all around.

Albert and Krijn want to raise the necessary funds to make these home improvements a reality. It is possible to sponsor them individually with an amount per kilometer, with an amount for reaching the finish, or with a general amount

👉If you decide to participate, send an email stating the amount you want to give to krijncora@gmail.com. We then keep track of the pledges, which is always exciting!

You can also send a donation directly:

  • to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U. Make sure to mention TC ROMANIA
  • 💳 Give by card
  • 👉When in the USA, make your tax-deductible gift payable to EEO Inc. Make sure to mention TC ROMANIA

🠈Georgiana Dragan-Moldoveanu is the director of House of Joy. Georgiana grew up in a violent environment, with an alcoholic father. Although she was an incredibly smart student, as a teenager she started to look for love and acceptance in the wrong places. At the age of 20 she started to use heroin.

From being an incredible student with a career ahead, she ended up sleeping on the streets, stealing, begging, and even selling her body for money. In 2009, she ended up in detox, completely hopeless, to the point of having her leg amputated due to heroin injections. That was the moment she cried out to God for help.

After she regained her life and went through a rehab program, God planted in her heart a strong desire to help other women going through the pain of addiction, trauma, and abuse. In 2014, she was blessed to marry the love of her life, Mihai, a former rocker who had an interest in satanism.

WE BELIEVE AND INVEST IN CHANGED LIVES! WE HOPE YOU WILL JOIN US.

Project news

Thanks to your response, we were able to send donations in order to support a variety of projects. Thank you very much for that.

The suffering as a result of the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria is indescribable. It is beyond comprehension when you see the images. Emergency aid efforts are being offered everywhere, but are also rather difficult due to the aftershocks and, well... where and how do you start clearing the rubble?

We transferred 5,000 euro to Samaritan's Purse. This Christian organization has set up a field hospital in the earthquake area. Their stories are heartbreaking, yet hopeful at the same time! Check out this VIDEO.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

The Weissensee fundraiser brought in 7,500 euro. We have been able to donate that amount to Teen Challenge in Armenia. A huge blessing for the work among the homeless and addicted there.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

The proceeds in Twinkeltje and de Schor over the month of February were more than 1,800 euro. That amount goes to Teen Challenge in Belgium for their work among homeless people and the addicted in Charleroi.

We visited Frédéric & Natacha Hensgens from Teen Challenge Belgium at the end of January. They currently have the opportunity to rent a property in one of the main shopping streets in the city where they could move their shop with second-hand clothing and perhaps also start a kind of coffee / community center.

It is an area where many drugs are trafficked and used... we will keep you informed of the developments.

That Sunday we were in the Christian Center in Brussels, an international church that is home to many nationalities.

The congregation prayed for Teen Challenge and Traveling Light and Jan had the opportunity to share a short word. It turned out to be exactly the word the pastor was going to speak about, always great when that happens of course 😁

If you have a heart for street evangelism and work among addicts in Charleroi, you can still transfer a donation, we will ensure that everything ends up at Teen Challenge.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

As far as the month of March is concerned, all proceeds in Twinkeltje and de Schor will be donated to the Teen Challenge rehabs in Berdichyv, Ukraine. Great to see and hear how the work there continues unabated, despite the war.

We would like to continue to encourage them and also help them to cover their daily costs. The hopelessness resulting from the ongoing war situation has prompted many women to start drinking and/or using drugs.

How nice when, despite difficult circumstances, they manage to find their way to one of the rehabs in Berdichev, where they often (if not always) have an encounter with Jesus Christ.

Project updates

Back in November, we wrote about the work of Teen Challenge among the homeless and addicted in Albania and the need for new beds and mattresses, among other things. (You can read that post HERE).

This week we received a message from director Orges (Gesi) Hysenaj that the beds and mattresses arrived. The men now all sleep in a good bed and that is very nice!

Attached is a photo of the men in the program carrying the mattresses into the house.

As Traveling Light, we always try to show you (the donors) as much as possible how your donations are being used. Sometimes through our visits, sometimes by sharing photos and thank you notes.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

In January we wrote about the food parcels project in Serbia. You responded quite quickly to that, several donations came in and we were able to give them the nice gift of 3,000 euro.

Erika Sablyov of the team 'Ruka za Druga' ('Hand for a Friend') wrote to us this week:

"This Saturday we had a whole day of socializing with the homeless. It was extremely cold outside and more people came than we expected (about 30). All the food we prepared for them was served and eaten. On Saturday, they could bathe again, get their hair cut, get clean and warm clothes, and a hot meal with a salad. We bought medicine for two. We also showed a movie in the church hall."

On behalf of Erika and the team, thank you very much for your donations. For the time being, they can buy and distribute weekly food packages and also organize such special Saturdays!

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

Last Tuesday, it was an exciting day for our ice skaters at the Weissensee. Krijn finished the 200 km and Henk (together with his son Kees) finished the 100 km. So, top performances by the men. We take our hats off!

With their sponsoring campaign they raised (so far) more than 7,000 euro for the work of Teen Challenge in Armenia. Donations are still coming in, so we will wait a little longer and then announce the final amount.

✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦

The proceeds of Twinkeltje and De Schor in January (including specified donations) were 1,800 euro and that goes entirely to the work of Teen Challenge in Slovenija. For the month of February, we have chosen the work of Teen Challenge in Belgium. We (Jan and Marja) visited them last weekend. They work among the homeless and addicted in Charleroi!

Your donations are always welcome. You can send a gift in different ways, please take note:

Weissensee 2023 fundraiser for Teen Challenge Armenia

Three years ago, our ice skating team raised a nice amount at the Weissensee in Austria for the new men's rehab center at Teen Challenge in Armenia.

Later this month, Krijn Donk (Papendrecht) and Henk Vlot (Oud-Alblas) are going to put on their ice skates again 💪in order to raise funds for the further completion of this rehabilitation center. The center offers a home to men who want to turn their backs on their addictions and other life-controlling problems while getting a chance to build a new life with God's help.

👉 Of course,  the ice skaters are hoping that you want to sponsor their athletic efforts again!

Last summer, Krijn and Cora Donk visited the center in Yerevan, Armenia. A special journey in itself, because they drove there in their own car! On the way, they climbed Mount Ararat.

Once in Yerevan, they saw with their own eyes how practical and spiritual help is being offered to men, in seemingly hopeless situations. Great to see how previous donations were spent to make the house habitable.

However, the house still needs to be completely finished, it could use a good kitchen, etc. That's often how it goes... the centers are already fully occupied while there is still a lot of work to be done.

To this end, Krijn and Henk want to raise the necessary funds. They will be ice skating long distances on January 31. Krijn will go for 200 km, Henk probably for 100 km.

It is possible to sponsor Krijn and Henk as a team or individually:

  • with an amount per kilometer,
  • with an amount for reaching the finish or
  • with a general amount

If you decide to participate, you can send an email stating the amount you want to give to krijncora@gmail.com.

Or you can send a donation directly:

  • to St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U. Make sure to mention TC ARMENIA
  • 💳 Give by card
  • 👉When in the USA, make your tax-deductible gift payable to EEO Inc. Make sure to mention TC ARMENIA

We eagerly await your response!

Gagik and Lusine Mkrtchyan are the directors of Teen Challenge in Armenia. They run rehabilitation centers where men with addiction problems can start a new life. They also have taken in orphans in their own home.

We (Jan and Marja) met with them again recently at the Teen Challenge conference in Italy, this past November.

Update fundraiser for Teen Challenge Armenia

Krijn (black and orange) in action
Last Tuesday Krijn Donk and Henk Swijnenburg showed up at the start of the 200 km long ice skating tour at the Weissensee in Austria. Their goal was to raise funds for Teen Challenge in Armenia.

Unfortunately temperatures were just above freezing that day and there was a lot of water on the ice. The skaters did their utmost to prevent falling down on the wet ice, because further skating with wet clothing can lead to hypothermia.

Krijn reported that he had fallen three times, the last time just 700 meters before the finish, after which he got a severe cramp in his calf. Yet, he was able to finish the tour in an astonishing time of 7:38 hours, with an average speed of 26:15 km per hour. Unfortunately, Henk had to stop the fight against the weather and ice conditions after 150 km, after more than eight hours of skating.

Krijn and Henk at the end of a long day...
Although the lack of good quality ice and freezing temperatures were disappointing, the fundraising campaign certainly was a success. The two men raised 8,200 euro so far with their action, an amount that will go entirely to the work of Teen Challenge among the homeless, addicted and desperate in Armenia.

"A good sum has been raised for Armenia," said Krijn. "Such a good cause is a great incentive to skate the 200 km and suffer through the pain. The assistance and care that we receive from Adrie Swijnenburg is indispensable!"

We contacted Gagik and Lusine Mkrtchyan from Teen Challenge Armenia. They were completely taken by surprise to hear about the funds coming their way. "With that gift, we might be able to buy a piece of property with a larger house (where electricity and sanitary facilities are already present). There is a property for sale close to where we are currently working. We did not dare to dream that this could be a possibility."

We will keep you informed of the developments via this blog. We would like to thank everyone who has, in any way, contributed to this fundraiser. If you have not yet transferred your pledge or given a gift, please do so as soon as possible at St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275, BIC: RABONL2U stating: WEISSENSEE.

Activities and project news

The center in Yerevan is already in use
The Weissensee fundraiser 2020 for Teen Challenge Armenia has kicked off. If you want to sponsor the ice skaters, read HERE how you can become a part of this great effort to bring hope to the hopeless!

We hope and pray we can raise a solid donation for the renovation of the recently opened drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Yerevan.

Full house at Winiarczykowka, Poland
This month, the proceeds in Twinkeltje will go towards the work of Teen Challenge Winiarczykowka, Poland. This center, located in a former border post, offers a safe home to the elderly. So come visit us in Twinkeltje on Saturday (Korenbloemstraat 20, Papendrecht) for a cup of coffee or a nice bowl of soup and who knows, maybe we have something nice for you in the store.

Last weekend we had Maria Meier from Italy visiting us. She runs Comunita Brezzano, a Christian therapeutic community in Tuscany. On Friday we organized a mission night in Twinkeltje.

Mission night Italy in Twinkeltje
We had a nice dinner together, then Maria shared her heart. We showed pictures of our most recent visit (workweek 2019), we prayed and sang many songs together. It was a very encouraging evening. The offering we collected turned out to be 1200 euro (!), which will all go toward Comunita Brezzano. Thank you, on behalf of Maria.

This coming Friday night we are hosting Prayer for the Nations (every third Friday of the month) in Twinkeltje. We always pray for the nations of Europe, for Israel and the Middle East, for current projects and we share news. This Friday we will have Marek Deicmanis from Latvia visiting. So come and join us! Coffee and tea will be ready from 19:30 hours.

The next project is in ... Belarus, more about that soon..

GIFTS (large and small) are always welcome and can be directed at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

Weissensee 2020 fundraiser for Teen Challenge Armenia

Adrie, Henk and Krijn
It's January again, the month of our most exciting fundraiser of the year! On Tuesday, January 28 the Traveling Light skating team is planning to skate the 200 km tour on the Weissensee in Austria again.

Krijn Donk (Papendrecht), Henk Swijnenburg (Bleskensgraaf) and Adrie Swijnenburg (support & care) want to raise money for Teen Challenge Armenia and well for the renovation of a second men's center.

Gagik & Lusine
Gagik and Lusine Mkrtchyan are the directors of Teen Challenge in Armenia. They run a center where men with drugs and alcohol addictions have a chance to start a new life. (We supported them back in 2017 (read here) with a gift for the daily operations of the center.)

Much work to be done!
The center is actually always full and last year they started a second center in an old house on a large piece of farmland. The acreage that belongs to the farm makes it a good location for a rehab center, animals can be kept and crops can be grown.

The farm in Yerevan is very primitive, there is no running water, electricity or sanitary provisions. However, the need is so big that several men are already living and working there, some of them are not that young anymore.

The farm offers many opportunities for work/therapy
A substantial amount is needed to renovate the house and outbuildings. We believe that with your help it can become a beautiful center where many men can find a safe place to live and work and ... to have an encounter with God!

You can sponsor Krijn and Henk as a team or individually:
  • with a donation per kilometer,
  • with a donation to finish,
  • with a general donation, or
  • with a donation according to your own idea (for example for breaking a pr or last year's time result)

👉If you decide to participate, please send an e-mail with your pledge and encouraging words to krijncora@gmail.com.

Of course, you can send your donation right now if you like 😁St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275, BIC: RABONL2U.

What do you think, will personal records be broken?

We are looking forward again to your heart-warming reactions and we wish the skating team lots of success and perseverance.

Phase 2 project Teen Challenge men's home, Moldova

Team work in Moldova, last June
Back in June we wrote about the construction work in Moldova. Our annual Weissensee fundraiser, which always takes place in January, brought in a nice amount for the expansion of the Teen Challenge rehabilitation home in Falesti. The house offers a residential program for men who struggle with life controlling problems.

A team of men from the Teen Challenge program in Czech Republic traveled to Moldova to help with the construction work, they did an awesome job.

An entire floor was built on the existing house. As with many construction projects which are paid for by donations, the job is divided into different phases. Phase 2 is about ready to begin.

During phase 1 of the construction project
On October 1st a team from Czech Republic will travel to Moldova again to help with the insulation of the roof, the finishing of three rooms and a classroom and the installation of all electricity.

The plan is to install the plumbing and heating in a third phase. All depending on the gifts that come in for this construction project.

Plans for phase 2
We have promised to raise funds for phase 2 and come up with at least portion of the required amount. It would be nice if we could send them 3,000 euro so that the work can commence on October 1st, as planned.

If you want to help (again), you can send your precious gift to St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U. Make sure to mention: TC MOLDOVA.

Building project Teen Challenge Moldova

construction men's center Falesti
Earlier this year, our Weissensee fundraiser brought in the nice amount of 9,000 euro, purposed for the expansion of the Teen Challenge men's rehabilitation center in Falesti,  Moldova.

The house offers a Christian rehab and discipleship program for men with life controlling problems.

Construction work is now in full swing and they sent us some photos to share with you all. It is wonderful to know that the donated amount is indeed being used for the construction work: to realize a 2nd floor on the existing house. Which simply means there will be room for more beds and therefore more men will be able to get help.

Starting to look like something...
As we wrote earlier, a team of men from the Teen Challenge program in the Czech Republic drove to Moldova to help. What a great servanthood mentality, an example for all.

In every Teen Challenge program there are men who have a background in construction work, and such a project as this is a great opportunity to roll up sleeves and work together.
New room!

Again, we would like to thank all donors, and of course our ice skating team, for your generosity. A great fundraiser with a fabulous result!

The team in Moldova sends their greetings.

They worked really hard this week and we are really proud to see the work of their hands prosper. It gives us great joy to be part of the]is life changing ministry. God is good!

What can we say? Wow!
Donations for all our awesome projects are always welcome at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

We are currently fundraising for Teen Challenge in Albania, where such a beautiful center must also be opened!

Twinkeltje, Sweden, Italy and Moldova

Jan, Teus and Cora
We love it when people get creative and come up with ideas to sponsor what we do. Friend and family member Teus Donk decided to participate in a 10 km run in our town and raise funds to support the daily operations of our shop/coffee house Twinkeltje.

It was a very successful campaign. Together with his daughter, Teus ran the 10 km in an excellent time. He raised 1,000 euro. Last Saturday he handed the check to Traveling light board member Cora, who runs the shop.

With that money we can continue to receive people with hospitality and free coffee and tea. All sponsors, thank you! Come visit us.

Community meals
Talking about Twinkeltje ... Last week we had visitors from Sweden, Christian Alderblad (director of Teen Challenge) and his family were our guests for a week. We had a great time together.

During the mission night on Wednesday June 5th, Christian shared about Englahaket, the shop/coffee house that they recently opened in their city Örebro. The offering that evening was more than 1,000 euro which will also go towards the Teen Challenge coffee house work in Sweden. Thank you all very much!

Work week Italy 2018
From August 26 to September 2 we will again travel to Italy for a work week in Comunita Brezzano. Do you enjoy hard work (chopping wood, sawing and stacking) and good fellowship? Please contact us.

Every year we enjoy being in beautiful Tuscany.

Construction work in the Teen Challenge Men's Rehabilitation Center in Falesti, Moldova will start next week. The Weissensee fundraiser brought in 9,000 euro (!) for this purpose earlier this year. They will be adding a second floor to the existing center.

A team from the Teen Challenge program in Czech Republic will go to Moldova to help with the construction. They have promised to send photos so we can follow along 😀

We still owe you a report of Jan's visit to Albania and our recent visit to Switzerland.

Donations for all our awesome projects are always welcome at St. Traveling Light in Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275 BIC: RABONL2U.

We are currently fundraising for project summer camp Teen Challenge Ukraine.

Successful fundraiser for Teen Challenge Moldova!

200 km tour on the Weissensee, Austria
We promised to give a final report on our Weissensee fundraiser 2019. Our ice skating team raised more than 8,600 euro for the expansion of the Teen Challenge rehabilitation home in Moldova! The home offers a Bible based program for men with life controlling problems.

It is the first time that such an incredible amount has been raised and we are very grateful for the support we received. On January 29th ice skaters Krijn Donk (Papendrecht), Henk Swijnenburg (Bleskensgraaf) and Henk Vlot (Oud Alblas) entered the 200 km tour on the Weissensee in Austria.

winter style bandage
It was a freezing minus 16 degrees Celsius at the start and their water bottles were filled with ice, even the bananas were frozen. Snowfall had caused  many cracks in the ice and our skaters experienced quite a few falls

Henk Vlot broke his hand due to such a fall on the ice and he had to quit. Fortunately, and thanks to many prayers, he just received news that surgery is not necessary and when the doctors replaced the cast he told them everything about the fundraiser adventure.

Krijn Donk finished the 200 km in 7:41 hours, he finished in thirty-fourth place. Not bad at all, out of thousand participants! Henk Swijnenburg finished the tour without major injuries as well! Despite the fact that the men have not been able to break their personal records, they look back at a fantastic event and successful fundraiser.

The skating team experienced an overwhelming response. Krijn entered the tour for the seventh time for Traveling Light. 'The amount that our sponsors have pledged this year is an absolute record', says Krijn, 'we are very grateful for all the positive comments!'

The amount will fully benefit the project in Moldova. The expansion of the existing teen Challenge men's home will consist of a second floor. Of course we will keep you informed on this blog.

We would like to thank everyone who has, in any way, contributed to this fundraiser. If you have not yet transferred your pledge, please do so as soon as possible at St. Traveling Light, Papendrecht, IBAN: NL91RABO0118582275, BIC: RABONL2U stating: WEISSENSEE.
